Wilderness on Wheels and RiseUP: More Ways to Experience Colorado Outdoors
An outdoor invitation is more meaningful when there is a practical way to take part. A route’s surface, space, and setting can make a difference to whether someone chooses to visit. Wilderness on Wheels brings that attention to access into our RiseUP Elevation Challenge partner community.
This September, the partnership gives supporters a way to connect their movement goals with a mission focused on experiencing Colorado’s outdoors. It also offers a reminder: inclusion is not only an encouraging message. It involves the places, equipment, information, and choices that make participation possible.
Discover Wilderness on Wheels
Located in Grant, Colorado, Wilderness on Wheels offers accessible outdoor experiences, including boardwalk routes, fishing access, and camping or cabin options. Its mountain and creekside settings create different ways to spend time in nature.
The organization describes a longstanding commitment to outdoor access supported by volunteers and donations. Readers considering a visit should review the partner’s current information and contact it about their specific access needs, availability, and plans.
Grant is the location of the recreation site; Denver and Colorado Springs are communities whose residents can support or explore it. Supporters can learn about the Grant site, plan a visit with the organization, or contribute from their own communities.
Why this collaboration matters to RiseUP
Community participation is also central to our work. RiseUP’s Adult Day Programs in Denver and Colorado Springs use community experiences and skill-building as part of their support for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
A nature visit and an adult day program are different services, but both invite us to consider the person’s interests, choices, and experience. What would they enjoy? What information would help them decide? What support would make the experience workable?
By introducing Wilderness on Wheels through the challenge, we can help more RiseUP supporters discover accessible recreation. In turn, outdoor-access supporters can learn about RiseUP’s year-round programs. The fundraising partnership gives those shared values a practical focus without implying that the two organizations operate the same facilities.
Your challenge does not have to look like someone else’s
The RiseUP Elevation Challenge runs September 1-30, 2026. Choose the campaign’s 5,000-foot elevation or 15-mile distance goal, following its participation and accessibility guidance. Walk, hike, run, climb, stroll, or roll over the month.
You do not have to visit Wilderness on Wheels to support it through the challenge. Your fundraising can begin with a route close to home or an activity option suited to your circumstances. A challenge goal is not a statement that every trail or group hike is accessible to every participant.
Select Wilderness on Wheels from the participating nonprofit choices when registering. Half of the proceeds raised through your personal fundraising page support the nonprofit you select.
Turn a route into a conversation about access
A useful fundraising update can explain why outdoor access matters to you, show your progress, and link to your page. You could also introduce friends to Wilderness on Wheels so they can explore the organization for themselves.
Ask before sharing photographs or personal stories. Describe what people are doing rather than making assumptions about their disabilities or needs. Most importantly, keep the invitation open to different forms of support: donating, sharing, and cheering someone on all have a place.
Our fundraising outreach guide can help you turn that idea into a message for friends, family, or colleagues.
