The Lockwood Foundation and RiseUP: Making Colorado Mountain Adventure Accessible
The Lockwood Foundation and RiseUP: Making Colorado Mountain Adventure Accessible
For The Lockwood Foundation, making adventure accessible involves more than choosing an inspiring destination. It means bringing together adaptive equipment, preparation, volunteers, and an outdoor experience built around the person taking part. That is the work we are highlighting through our RiseUP Elevation Challenge partnership.
This September, supporters can connect their own movement and fundraising goals with an organization focused on opening access to Colorado’s trails and mountains. The collaboration is especially meaningful for people who want to contribute both their time and their community connections.
Meet The Lockwood Foundation
The Lockwood Foundation creates outdoor opportunities for people with limited mobility through adaptive trail equipment and volunteer teamwork. Its program uses a TrailRider and trained community support to help make mountain experiences possible.
Its TrailRider, volunteer teamwork, and careful preparation are central to the program. Together, they create a practical approach to adventures that require more than a standard wheelchair-accessible route. Supporters are helping sustain the people and planning behind the experience, not simply a destination.
Readers interested in joining the volunteer community can explore Lockwood’s volunteer information and ask the organization about preparation and appropriate roles.
Trailride-a-14er 2026: Mt. Elbert
Lockwood’s Trailride-a-14er 2026: Mt. Elbert event is scheduled for September 11-13, 2026. The expedition is planned to support an adaptive hiker on Colorado’s highest mountain using the East Ridge route.
This is a demanding mountain event, not a casual community stroll. Anyone interested should read the organizer’s current requirements, contact Lockwood with questions, and follow its registration and preparation instructions. A summit is an objective, not a guaranteed outcome.
The expedition is a separate event from the month-long RiseUP Elevation Challenge. Supporting one does not automatically register someone for the other.
Turn volunteer commitment into additional support
Lockwood volunteers already bring time and effort to the organization’s work. The RiseUP partnership offers another option: invite friends and family to support a personal September fundraiser.
The RiseUP Elevation Challenge runs September 1-30, with a goal of 5,000 feet of elevation or 15 miles of distance. Volunteers can review the challenge rules, register separately, and log qualifying activities toward their chosen goal. There is no requirement to complete Mt. Elbert to take part.
Choose The Lockwood Foundation from the participating nonprofit options when registering. Half of the proceeds raised through your participant page support the nonprofit you select. Someone who cannot volunteer on the mountain can still donate or share your page.
The connection to RiseUP’s everyday work
Adventure access and daily community participation are different experiences, but both ask us to pay attention to individual goals and support needs. At RiseUP, our Adult Day Programs in Denver and Colorado Springs focus on community connection and skills for everyday life.
The fundraising partnership introduces people who care about outdoor access to that broader mission, while giving RiseUP’s community a closer look at Lockwood’s adaptive-adventure work. The organizations retain their own programs and event responsibilities.
Share the work behind the adventure
A useful fundraiser can explain why accessible adventure matters to you and how people can support your effort. Use authentic, approved photographs that show the actual equipment and teamwork. Ask permission before sharing a participant’s story or identifying them in an image.
Read our fundraising outreach guide for ideas, review Lockwood’s Mt. Elbert event details, or explore the Elevation Challenge. Your role might be on the trail, behind a fundraising page, or simply helping the next supporter discover what makes this work possible.
